What is massage?

Massage is an ancient healing art form, documentation of which dates back to the 4th century B.C. The word "massage," which is derived from an old Arabic word meaning "stroke," uses hands-on techniques such as stroking, compressing, stretching, kneading, and vibrating to specific areas of the body. Nowadays two main categories are European and Oriental, under which there are literally hundreds, each with their unique benefits.

What are the benefits of massage?

Despite the long list of documented benefits of massage, new ones are still being discovered. Today massage is used for increasing circulation, relief of muscle spasms and chronic pain, increased joint flexibility, increased secretion of endorphins, lowering anxiety and psychological stress, cardiac rehabilitation, increased cellular reparations (healing), increased lymphatic drainage, regulating blood sugar, boosting immune function, and boosting athletic performance, to list a few. The effects of massage are profound for body, mind and spirit.

Is everybody a candidate for massage therapy?

Your practitioner can evaluate how useful and how suitable massage would be for you. There are certain physical and emotional conditions where massage is contra-indicated. Occasionally medical clearance from your physician is required. Generally speaking, most everyone can benefit from massage.

What is the massage experience like?

Most massages happen on a padded massage table.   The practioner instructs the patient to remain clothed or disrobe, depending on the treatment and the comfort level of the patient. Law requires patients to be covered with a towel at all times, except for areas being treated. Lotions are used with European massages. Massage can be very relaxing, but at times may require deep pressure to relieve spasms or promote healing. During the massage, the patient is always encouraged to express any discomfort or sensitivity. Relaxing music is usually used during treatment. Patients may converse with the practitioner, but silence often produces more tranquility and healing.

Can anyone perform massage?

New York, like many other states, requires licensing and registration for massage therapists. Massage therapists must complete extensive training in the areas of anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, first aid/CPR, and massage techniques, and must pass a NYS board exam. Various additional certifications are required to perform certain other techniques.

Preparing for your massage

All massages must be scheduled in advance. Promptness is expected. Massages are 1/2 hr., 1 hr., and 1-1/2 hr. in duration. Bring comfortable clothes for Oriental massage, or to change into after lotions are used. Any open wounds must be dressed. Keep in mind that caffeine and stimulants may inhibit relaxation. Try to allow some time before and after your massage to unwind, so as to get the most from the experience.
